The King’s Lemon Drops

There’s no excuse as to why it has taken me this long to post a cocktail recipe, but I’m going to try to post more of them. A couple of years ago my mom got a little lemon tree. It really looks more like a lemon bush, because it’s not terribly big. The size is actually perfect, because in the summer she can keep it out in the sun, and then move it indoors when the temperature begins to dip in the winter. When I was home for Christmas this last year, she had it in the living room. It was the first year that it had produced any fruit, and it was laden with lemons. There were probably close to fifty lemons on the tree, and the fellow at the nursery told my mom that she could expect more than that next year. So, one night Mom, Dad and I are sitting in the living room, waiting for one of our favorite shows to come on when my mom suggests that we try some of the lemons. What other way to try these tart little treats than to make a few lemon drops. The cocktails were so delicious that we decided to make another round! I think she’ll be getting a lot of use out of her little lemon tree.

I made these citrus cocktails out of lemons picked from my mom’s tree, so the juice was exceptionally fresh.

  • 1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed from about 6-8 lemons
  • 3/4 cup vodka
  • 3-4 tablespoons sugar, depending on your taste
  • Peeled lemon rind, for garnish

Before juicing the lemons, use a vegetable peeler or paring knife to cut away a couple pieces of lemon rind for garnish. Sugar the rims of two martini glasses, by running a lemon quarter around the rim of an inverted glass and then dipping the edge of the glass in a plate of sugar. Repeat for the second glass. In a martini shaker  filled with ice, add the fresh lemon juice, vodka and sugar and shake well. Pour equal amounts into both glasses and serve with the lemon rind garnish. Cheers!
