4 Reasons to Visit Food Heaven: Bologna

Often forgotten on many travel itineraries in favor of Italy’s more famous cities, Bologna actually has so much to offer tourists. From food to art to hidden secrets, this incredible city is a must-see for anyone wanting to experience a bit of real Italian culture. With that in mind, here are 4 reasons you should try to visit at least once in your lifetime, even if just for a day.

1. Incredible Weather

During the winter, Bologna’s temperatures drop to as low as 45°F (7°C), but the city more than makes up for it with its 86°F (30°C) summers. If you’re looking for a relaxing city break that is going to guarantee incredible weather, Bologna is definitely a great choice.

2. Stunning Views

Although the same can be said about any Italian city, Bologna definitely has some of the best views out there. With a sweeping landscape, stunning terracotta rooves, and the most beautiful buildings flooding the city, you’re sure to fall in love as soon as you arrive. While it may be a small city in comparison to some, it’s definitely something that adds to its charm and beauty.

3. Not Too Touristy

Maybe one of the best reasons to visit Bologna is that you’ll feel as though you’re truly getting a chance to discover the city, rather than being herded around in a crowd of angry and confused tourists. Although the city is slowly becoming better known due to Instagram and Pinterest, you’re still far more likely to hear Italian than English on the streets. If you’re lucky, you may even find a cafe to yourself. Another great thing about Bologna not being a tourist hotspot is that other than in the main square, you’ll find all of the restaurants and bars all offer good food at reasonable prices rather than being designed to trap tourists.

4. The Delicious Food

For those that have never heard of Bologna before, it is known as ‘la dotta, la rossa e la grassa – to put it simply it translates to ‘the educated’ in a nod to its university, ‘the red’ in reference to the terracotta buildings and their communist leanings; and most importantly ‘the fat’ in reference to the city’s delicious food.

Even by Italy’s notoriously high foodie standards, Bologna is definitely a well-known food hub, as you’d expect from the place that invented bolognese. If you want to try some of Bologna’s incredible cuisines (of course you do) during your visit then you should definitely check out Emilia Delizia. Emilia Deliza offers amazing food tours across the city, allowing you to sample their delicious parmesan, balsamic, and parma ham.

If you’re looking to visit a tourist-free city that has lots of character, a stunning view and incredible food, Bologna is definitely the perfect destination. With affordable prices and hot summers, you definitely can’t go wrong.
