When ordering steak in a restaurant there is only one drink that goes with it, and that is, of course, a nice glass of wine. Most people tend to opt for red wine, but there is a wealth of beautiful white wines that go deliciously with a nice piece of steak as well. Penfolds 2008 St Henri Shiraz – It wouldn’t be right to have a list of wines to go with steak without having a Shiraz present. The Penfolds 2008 St Henri Shiraz is made up of 91 percent Shiraz and nine percent Cabernet Sauvignon. It is extremely ripe and full-bodied. The flavors are distinct as well, with the spicy dark fruit really tantalizing the taste buds.  

• Villiera 2007 Pinotage – If you are a fan of dry/medium-bodied red wine, you will love Villiera 2007 Pinotage. It features the juicy flavors of raspberry and plum with mineral and vanilla notes. This is the best wine on sale to go for if you are going for a delicate cut of beef, such as filet mignon.

• Benziger 2008 Merlot – If you are going to tuck into a juicy burger this is definitely the wine you should go for. Benziger 2008 Merlot is a medium to full-bodied wine. The jammy fruit flavors are delicious and there is an evident touch of nutmeg and pepper which really makes this wine a special one.

What types of white wine go best with steak?

The Foundry Roussanne 2010 – The first white wine on the list goes beautifully with beef. It’s a distinct wine which has a very complex taste. You have the stunning combination of the following flavors; tropical fruit and pear. There are some lovely citrus notes as well.

Haskell Anvil Chardonnay 2010 – This white wine is extremely well-balanced. It consists of an array of citrus fruits, yet the real winning quality is the tart marmalade hints. This is a great wine to go for if you fancy a pepper steak.

Nederburg Ingenuity 2010 – Last but not least, the final wine on the list of suggestions is Nederburg Ingenuity 2010. This wine is crafted from seven diverse grape varieties and thus as you can imagine you get to experience beautiful layers of flavor, such as cream, stone fruit, and citrus fruit. This will go with any type of steak dish.
